東漢有個對佛教教義很有研究的學者，叫牟融。他引用儒家的詩書向儒者宣講佛經，受到了一些儒者的責難，指斥他爲什麼不直接依據佛經來回答問題。於是牟融講了音樂家公明儀的故事；公明儀對着一頭正吃草的牛彈了一首高深的曲子，牛毫不理會，只顧自己吃草，後來公明儀改彈像墳子、牛蠅和小牛叫喚的聲音，牛就搖着尾巴、豎起耳朵來聽了。他最後說：所以，對沒有讀過佛經的人直接談佛經，等於白講，成語對牛彈琴據此而來。

During the Warring States Period, there was a musician named Gongmingyi, who played musical instruments very well. Many people liked listen to him play, and respected him very much.
在戰國時期，有一個名字叫公明儀的音樂家，他很會彈琴。很多人都喜歡聽他彈琴，人們很敬重他。
One day, Gongmingyi saw a cow when he was having fun in the countryside.
一天，公明儀在郊外遊玩時，看到了一頭正在埋頭吃草的大黃牛。
He thought, "Everybody compliments my music. Why don't I play for this cow?"
他心裏想：“大家都讚揚我的琴技高超，不如我給這頭牛也彈一曲吧！”
So he took out his guqin, He played a piece of elegant quaint music for the cow, but the cow just kept grazing the grass with its head down.
於是，他拿出心愛的琴，給牛彈奏了一曲古雅的曲子，可是牛還是在埋頭吃草，根本就沒搭理他。
He thought that the cow might not listen to the elegant quaint music. He played another piece of joyful music, but the cow still kept its head down to graze the grass and totally ignored him.
他想，牛可能不太聽古雅的曲子，於是他又彈奏了一曲歡快的曲子，牛依然埋頭吃草不理他。
Gongmingyi was so disappointed and started to question his ability.
公明儀非常失望，開始懷疑自己的琴技。
Someone passing by saw this scene and said, "It's not because your ability is bad. It is that the cow cannot understand music at all."
有個路過的人看到這個場景，笑着說：“不是你彈的琴不好，而是牛根本聽不懂啊！”
Gongmingyi sighed and had to go home with the guqin.
公明儀嘆了口氣，只好抱着琴回家去了。
