Plankton浮游生物
Scattered through the seas of the world are billions of tons of small plants and animals called plankton。 Most of these plants and animals are too small for the human eye to see。 They drift about lazily with the currents， providing a basic food for many larger animals。
Plankton has been described as the equivalent of the grasses that grow on the dry land continents， and the comparison is an appropriate one。 In potential food value， however， plankton far outweighs that of the land grasses。 One scientist has estimated that while grasses of the world produce about 49 billion tons of valuable carbohydrates each year， the sea＇s plankton generates more than twice as much。
Despite its enormous food potential， little effect was made until recently to farm plankton as we farm grasses on land。 Now marine scientists have at last begun to study this possibility， especially as the sea＇s resources loom even more important as a means of feeding an expanding world population。
No one yet has seriously suggested that " plankton-burgers" may soon become popular around the world。 As a possible farmed supplementary food source， however， plankton is gaining considerable interest among marine scientists。
One type of plankton that seems to have great harvest possibilities is a tiny shrimp-like creature called krill。 Growing to two or three inches long， krill provides the major food for the great blue whale， the largest animal to ever inhabit the Earth。 Realizing that this whale may grow to 100 feet and weigh 150 tons at maturity， it is not surprising that each one devours more than one ton of krill daily。

英語作爲國際通用語，其重要地位越來越得到大家的共識。因爲，“我們不能忽視一個巨人的存在”（英國某語言專家語）。所以，我們要下定決心，排除萬難，掌握英語。而構建你英語大廈的基礎，就是詞彙。
1． 詞彙學習的重要性。英語能力培養程序：詞彙-語法-聽-說-讀-寫。英語高分訓練程序：詞彙-讀-寫。這兩套程序是語言學和認知學研究的成果，次序千萬不能顛倒。詞彙是基礎，是素材，是細胞，不要指望詞彙基本功不紮實的人能夠考出高分；閱讀是中國人學習外語的最佳途徑，也是目前各類外語考試的最主要題型；寫作是掌握外語，檢驗自己水平的最主要方式。有興趣的人可以參考這方面的專著。
2。 詞彙的學習最困難。如果有人說不，他保證是“唯心主義”。那既然如此，有無捷徑？這兒就有一條捷徑，穿越時空隧道，到達夢幻之境。詞彙的學習要以變應變，在不同的階段，要有不同的方法。想一想你是如何記住f ace 和pencil的？死記硬背，“無他法，唯手熟爾”（賣油翁）。所以，從原理上來說，詞彙的學習離開死記硬背是不行的，因爲，外語的學習要點在於記憶，死記硬背好比打基礎，離開了他，毫無大廈可言。如果你的詞彙量在5 000以下，買一本詞彙書，詞彙量在3000（背功不行）5000（背功還行）7500（背功很好）。選擇標準有三：1。有音標；2 有詞性；3 內容簡單，沒有例句。 你是如何記住facial, surface, deface; acclaim, declaim, proclaim 的？因爲你知道-face- ,-claim-的意義。所以，詞根詞綴法是你學習詞彙第二階段的方法。詞根詞綴法的意義我就不多說了，你是如何記住flagrant 和fragrant的？因爲你知道-l-(一根大棒),-r-(一朵鮮花)，所以他們的意義就井然分明瞭。聯想記憶法是你學習詞彙第三階段的方法。唯有聯想，才能強力擴大詞彙範圍。聯想記憶法有時也叫做邪門記憶法，這方面的書很多。
3 . 如何運用詞典擴大詞彙量。關於辭典。詞彙的學習離不開詞典，如何選用她至關重要。我做一個Prediction ，70%的人用的是牛津和朗文。但是你如果看一下英語專業的考試大綱的話，你會發現，COLLINS COBUILD 和 WEBSTER’S COLLEGE DICTIONARY 纔是最好的工具書。我用的就是後者。爲什麼要推薦這倆本呢？1、釋義詳細，簡練；2、提高詞彙在上下文的理解能力；3、後者還提供詞源，方便理解與記憶。
4. 詞彙量大對閱讀的幫助。閱讀有三個層次：字面意義，行間意義，言外之意。試題考察的比例一般爲2：2：1。字面意義不必多說，對於行間意義和言外之意的理解，需要高超的技巧，一般的閱讀書上都有，在此我提一下篇章結構的作用。篇章結構對於解答行間意義和言外之意的提問特別有效。

Dogs belong to the canine.
When a dog follows its nose, it's actually being led by thee key senses. Sight:a glimpse of the enemy saves them barking up the wrong tree. Sound: a bark can be a fierce threat, but it's also how canines make their long distance calls. Smell: this tells a dog more than all the other senses put together.
Inside its nose are around two hundred million smell sensitive cells, forty times more than in humans. Through them the dog's brain can pick up signals from one molecule of scent in a million. It gives the dog: a completely different picture of the world, based on what it smells, rather than what it sees.
Flowers are irrelevant to a dog. So their scent is meaningless. But food is a serious matter. What to us is an empty plate, is covered with the smell of chicken to a hungry dog.
