從前，有一個放牛的孩子，他叫牛郎，牛郎從小父母雙亡，由哥哥嫂子撫養長大，牛郎十幾歲的時候就和哥哥嫂子分了家，只有一頭老牛和他作伴，這頭老牛是頭神牛，經常幫助牛郎，後來在神牛的幫助下，他找到了自己心愛的娘子，她是王母娘娘的外孫女，名叫織女，就這樣，牛郎和織女結婚了，生了兩個可愛的兒女。不久，織女私自加嫁給牛郎的事情最終被王母娘娘知道了，派人把織女抓了回去。後來，老牛死了，在臨死之前，它幫牛郎出了一個主意：只要穿上老牛的牛皮，就能飛上天去。可是，王母娘娘用她頭上的金簪把天上劃了一道波濤滾滾的天河，把牛郎和織女隔開了。後來王母娘娘總算髮了善心，准許他們每年七月初七相會一次，這一天，無數只喜鵲飛到天河上，搭成一座鵲橋，讓他們在這鵲橋上相會。
這就是“七夕”的來歷。
