Many people regard money as the most important thing in their life, but I don t agree with them. There are so many things that money can t buy. The first, money can t buy us knowledge, abilities and experience. The second, money can t buy us a happy mood and a good health.

However, money plays a significant role in our daily life. We can t live without it, because we have to use money to buy our daily necessities, like food, drinks, clothes, books, and so on. And we also need money to pay for our houses and education.

All in all, we should have a correct concept of money. We can t live for money, but take it as a tool leading a better life.

The earthquake

An earthquake is a tremor of the earth's surface usually triggered by the release of underground stress along fault lines. This release causes movement in masses of rock and resulting shock waves. In spite of extensive research and sophisticated equipment, it is impossible to predict an earthquake, although experts can estimate the likelihood of an earthquake occurring in a particular region.

In 1935, American seismologist (地震學家) Charles Richter developed a scale that measures the magnitude of seismic waves. Called the Richter scale, it rates earth tremors on a scale from 1 to 9, with 9 being the most powerful and each number representing an increase of ten times the energy over the previous number. According to this scale, any quake that is higher than 4.5 can cause damage to stone buildings; quakes rated a magnitude of 7 and above are considered very severe. A less-known scale, the Mercalli scale (麥氏震級), was devised by Italian seismologist Giuseppe Mercalli to measure the severity of an earthquake in terms of its impact on a particular area and its inhabitants and buildings.

Some earthquakes are too small to be felt but can cause movement of the earth, opening up holes and displacing rocks. Shock waves from a very powerful earthquake can trigger smaller quakes hundreds of miles away from the epicenter. Approximately 1,000 earthquakes measuring 5.0 and above occur yearly. Earthquakes of the greatest intensity happen about once a year and major earthquakes (7.0-7.9) occur about 18 times a year. strong earthquakes (6.0-6.9) occur about 10 times a month and moderate earthquakes (5.0-5.9) happen more than twice daily. Most earthquakes are not even noticed by the general public, since they happen either under the ocean or in unpopulated areas. Sometimes an earthquake under the ocean can be so severe, it will cause a tsunami, responsible for far greater damage.

The greatest danger of an earthquake comes from falling buildings and structures and flying glass, stones and other objects.

If you are in an earthquake

If you are indoors, find a secure location to wait out the quake, such as under a heavy table or desk, or in an interior hallway where you can brace yourself between two walls. Doorways are among the safest places to stand, thanks to the strong beams overhead. However, watch out for swinging doors. Stay away from windows.

If you are outdoors, try to get into an open area, away from falling buildings, power lines, trees, etc.

If you are in a crowded public area, crouch down, with your hands protecting your head and neck.

If you are in your car, pull over to the side, away from power lines and overpasses, and stay inside the car until the shaking has subsided.

Be sure to put on shoes immediately, to avoid injury from stepping on broken glass and objects.

Check yourself and others for injuries.

Check for gas and water leaks and damage to electrical wires.

Survey the exterior of your home for structural damage to the chimney, roof, foundation and walls.

Do NOT use your automobile unless there is an emergency.

If you must leave the area, try to leave word where you can be contacted.

REMEMBER that there may be aftershocks, which can also cause great damage to your surroundings. Be prepared!

Does the modern society need the spirit of Kong Zi

1. 可適當發揮,以使行文連貫;

Last week we had a discussion about whether we still need Confucian thought in modern society. About 60% of the students in my class think it necessary to study Confucian thought. For one thing, more and more people in different countries are bursting to study it, showing that it is still treasured in the world. For another, Confucian thought is believed to have made great contributions to the peace of human beings.

But every coin has two sides. About 40% of the students in my class insist Confucian thought is outdated. In a way it limits the development of the world.

Different people have different opinions. I think Confucian thought still has some positive effects on our society.

Haste Makes Waste

The proverb "Haste makes waste" means that one may delay the time to complete one thing if he rushes to do it, because he may neglect something important in the process and has to do it again from the beginning. So one should do every step well.

Take remembering English words for example, every student wants to enlarge his vocabulary. But this aim cannot be achieved in one or two days. You should stick to remem bering some words a day and revise the words every few days. In this way you can keep the words in your mind firmly. There is mo shortcut. If you want to stuff all the words into your brain and mot to revise them, you will remember nothing. So don't be hasty. Haste makes waste.

Look up to the starry sky, stand on solid ground

I'm no Li Bai, but when it comes to poetry I know what I like, and that's what I know. Some things are inalienably true: Water is wet, grass is green (kind of), dogs bark and houses prices rise.

The line yang wang xing kong ("look up at the starry sky") is one of my favorites. Why? Because it's true. Look at the sky. What do you see? That's right. Stars.

It's very important we all gaze at the skies and don't look around us. Look! Big apartment, high-earning job, KTV booked round the clock, two cars with different license plates and, of course, a hot wife (everyone wants a hot wife. Even my girlfriend, just for the marvelous face it gives).

If we all do this, we drive up national productivity and everybody's happy, except the peasants. But it's crucial to remember the other half. Not the peasants. The earth.

Reach for the Sky was a famous book by a wheelchair-bound pilot written after World War II. Today, we are asked to do a far more important thing: To reach for the ground.

Or, in another way, jiao ta shi di (roughly translated: get real). Keep your feet firmly on dry land. Life is likely going to be living in a dormitory, working for the man and looking at hot wives on the Internet.

It was, I believe, Oscar Wilde, or possibly George Bernard Shaw (or maybe even Noel Coward - it definitely wasn't Dorothy Parker) who said: "We are all of us in the gutter but some of us are looking at the stars."

What exactly did he mean? And how can I use this to finagle a passing grade and ensure a high-flying career at a top 500 company, like Foxconn (they've had some openings recently), or failing that, a kindergarten security guard post? The answer is: I don't know. But I've just had a text to say someone will be emailing me the answers soon.
