小說情節很簡單，主要是從“我”角度講述小王子游歷過程。因爲一朵美麗而嬌氣玫瑰，小王子離開了一直平靜地生活着B-612小遊星，他先後遊歷了六個星球，在這些星球上，他遇到一些他覺得很不可理逾大人，狂妄自大國王，財迷心竅商人、迂腐點燈人……於是他不斷感慨，“大人世界確實奇怪。”在這裏作者以小王子孩子式眼光，透視出這些大人們空虛、盲目和愚妄，也道出了成人孤獨寂寞、無可適從處境。
最後他來到了地球。在這裏他遇到了一隻狐狸，這隻狐狸給他解決了那朵嬌氣小玫瑰給他帶來對愛疑惑，使他明白，愛意味着責任，意味着慈悲，有了愛(廣義愛)生活裏一切纔有了意義。狐狸告訴他：“對於你使之馴順東西，你永遠有責任。你要對你玫瑰盡責。”“如果你使我馴順了，我生活就會充滿陽光，歡快起來。我將會聽出一種與衆不同腳步聲。…….你有着一頭金髮，於是，一旦你使我馴順了，這將變得妙不可言!金色小麥將使我回想起你來。於是我就會愛上穿行麥浪風聲……”愛使人懂得了憂傷和痛苦，同時使人擺脫了孤獨寂寞，使生活變得有充滿情趣和意義。正象小王子對“我”說：“這就象花一樣。如果你愛上了一朵生長在一顆星星上花，那麼夜間，你看着天空就感到甜蜜愉快，所有星星上都好象開着花。”於是作者明白，這世界上，一隻小綿羊吃掉一朵花兒，是沒什麼大不了事，但對於小王子來說，“那就如同所有星星頃刻間都熄滅。”
